Talk and Discussion with Andreas Harsono: The Rise of Intolerant Islam in Indonesia
Wednesday, 13th of September 2023, 18:30 p.m., Berlin Global Village, Am Sudhaus 2, 12053 Berlin
Indonesia is very often portrayed to be a moderate Muslim country with impressive economic growth. It is also seen to be the largest nickel producing country in the world. At the same time there are worrying signs of increasing Islamic radicalism. Over the last two decades, Indonesia has been prosecuting and jailing hundreds of people under the toxic blasphemy law. It also has more than 60 mandatory hijab rules. Sanctions range from verbal warnings, expulsion from school or work to jail terms of up to three months. The hijab regulations have triggered nationwide bullying against girls and women to wear the hijab. In December 2022, the Indonesian parliament introduced a new criminal code whose articles violate the rights of women, religious minorities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, and undermine rights to freedom of speech and association.
Join us for an insightful discussion with Andreas Harsono, a seasoned researcher at Human Rights Watch, who has frequently reported about discrimination as well as ethnic and religious violence in Indonesia.
The event is jointly organized by Watch Indonesia! e.V and the Freigeist Research Group „Secularity, Islam, and Democracy in Indonesia and Turkey“ at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
