Down To Earth, No. 18, Sep. 92
The US conservation organisation. Nature Conservancy, which opened its
Indonesia field office last year, has received US $102,000 from American
Express and Ramada International Hotels and Resorts to help conserve two
national parks in Central Sulawesi, the Morowali Nature Reserve and Lore
Lindu National Park. According to a report in the Jakarta Post, Nature
Conservancy will improve management for the parks and make programmes that
meet the needs of people living near the parcs. "It is important to make
the people, who live in the areas aware of the environment, by reducing
their illegal hunting and slash-and-burn agricultural practices, while
at the same time helping them to be-self-reliant,” said the director of
Nature Conservancy's Indonesia office. (Jakarta Post 20/6/92) The question
is, will Nature Conservancy only blame the people who rely on the forests
for their living or will it speak out against the dam in its efforts to
protect Lore Lindu?
