Reuter, Jakarta, Menuk Suwondo, May 23 - Four
students in the central Java capital of Semarang
were arrested earlier this week for organising a Demonstration opposing
the election which they condemned as a tool for the leadership to retain
power. There have been several reports of violence and a number of arrests
as authorities crack down on violation of
campaign rules. In the ancient Javanese city of
Yogyakarta more than 1,000 people protested against a government ban on
motorcades, local press reports said. Supporters of both opposition parties,
the PDI and the Moslem-based United Development PArty (PPP), tore down
flags and party symbols and replaced them with white flags. The white flags
symbolise those who refuse to vote, a gesture which in the past has been
a form of protest against the inevitable government win in every election.
