February 22nd, 2008

Aide-Mémoire 7th UN Human Rights Council 3rd to 28th March 2008

Since the beginning of its democratic transition in 1998, Indonesia has ratified several international human rights instruments, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESC) and the Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT). While these steps are welcomed, Indonesia has yet to act upon the obligations ... read more

Oil palm plantations? Carbon credits? Papua’s forests targeted

Oil palm plantations? Carbon credits? Papua’s forests targeted

Down to Earth, November 2007

West Papua / forests:

At the same time, discussions are in progress to reserve large areas of Papua’s forest to generate carbon credits for trade on international markets. Decisions about these developments will very probably be made over the heads of the people who will be most directly affected by them: the indigenous ... read more

Open letter to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono concerning Col. Cav. Burhanuddin Siagian, Commander of the Resort Military Command 172/PWY Jayapura, Papua

Open letter to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono concerning Col. Cav. Burhanuddin Siagian, Commander of the Resort Military Command 172/PWY Jayapura, Papua

28 June 2007

Dear President Yudhoyono,

We are writing to express our grave concern about the tenure of Col. Burhanuddin Siagian as commander of the Jayapura sub-regional military command (Korem 172/ PWY/Jayapura) in Papua. Col. Siagian has been indicted twice for crimes against humanity in East Timor (now Timor-Leste). Indonesia has not complied with its obligations under international law and Indonesian domestic law to prosecute Col. Siagian for his alleged crimes, and it has furthermore failed to extradite him to East Timor ... read more

Indonesia: Impunity must be brought to an end – all conflicts must be resolved by peaceful means

Indonesia: Impunity must be brought to an end – all conflicts must be resolved by peaceful means

January 15th, 2007

Aide-Mémoire 4th Session of the UN Human Rights Council 12th March to 6th April 2007

Impunity

Impunity is still enjoyed by those responsible for the 1999 violence in East Timor, despite repeated unambiguous demands and recommendations on the part of UN organs. This is above all the report of the Commission ... read more
