IFET-OP applauds massive turn-out at UN voting process, condems Indonesian-backed militia violence and calls for UN peacekeepers

IFET-OP, the largest international observer group in East Timor, reported today that the UNAMET administered voting process in a “free and fair” manner, but has serious concerns about the environment in which the consultation has taken place. Although Mondays balloting was largely free of violence and intimidation, IFET-OP sees that day as more the exception than the rule. Ongoing attention and pressure from the international community is required if the consultation process in East Timor is to conclude freely and peacefully.
